Local Amenities

The area is part of the Preston Park Conservation Area of Brighton. It is almost entirely residential with a mixture of semi-detached villas and terraced houses, many of which have been converted into flats. The area’s buildings are described in the council’s conservation area character statement as having “a high quality of design with individual details such as carved barge boards or decorative plasterwork, which has resulted in a pleasantly cohesive and attractive townscape”.

Public transport

Buses: Frequent services to/from central Brighton along Ditchling Road (26, 46, 50) and London Road (5, 5A, 5B, 56). The number 79 runs along Ditchling Road to Ditchling Beacon on Sundays only.

Trains: Frequent services from London Road station off Springfield Road. Trains run on the East Coastway line west to Brighton and east to Lewes, Eastbourne and Hastings.

Open Spaces

There are no public open spaces within the Southdown Rise area itself but there are three parks not far away: Preston Park a short walk away to the west; Blakers Park on the other side of Stanford Avenue to the north; The Level lies to the south at the bottom of Ditchling Road.

Allotments are available from the council but there are waiting lists for most areas.

The area is well served by local shops: a parade of shops on its southwestern edge on Beaconsfield Road and the shopping area of Fiveways to the north. Beaconsfield Road has a pharmacy, delicatessen, newsagents, off-licence, organic wholefoods, and glazing. Fiveways has estate agents, dry cleaners, post office, pharmacy, childrens toys, office supplies, butchers, bakeries, florists, greengrocer, delicatessen, off-licence, books & antiques, cards and gifts.

Eating and drinking

There is only one pub within the Southdown Rise area itself, the Open House in Springfield Road next to London Road station. It serves food and a range of drinks including real ale in three inside areas and a large beer garden. Locally produced artwork from the likes of the Fiveways Artists group adorns the downstairs walls. The Open House deserves thanks for its support of the residents association and many of our meetings are held here.

Downs Junior School is inside the area, sandwiched between the tops of Rugby and Grantham Roads. Downs Infant School, is just on the other side of Ditchling Road. Local secondary schools include Dorothy Stringer School, and Varndean School.

There is one GP practice located actually in the area, Preston Park Surgery, 2a Florence Road, telephone: 01273 559601. The practice is currently accepting new patients. Other GP practices can be found at the NHS Choices website.

One Church Baptist, on the corner of Florence Road and Southdown Avenue.

Stanford Avenue Methodist on the corner of Southdown Avenue and Stanford Avenue.

St Augustine’s Church, at the bottom of Florence Road, is a former Anglican church declared redundant in 2003.
